About Other Activities

I’m often asked “What is there is for NON-PAINTING PARTNERS to do?” – and I always answer with: “There’s PLENTY!!”

Typical of Greek island life, the pace on Skiathos is slow and it’s very easy to idle away the hours relaxing, curled up with a good book under a shady tree or stretched out on a sun lounger, by the pool or on a beach:

But for the more active or adventurous visitors, there are many activities on offer:

GUIDED  WALKING/HISTORY TOURS, around the picturesque town and harbour:

Visit  the PAPADIAMANTIS MUSEUM, once the home of Greece’s best known short story/prose writer; the great literary figure Alexandros Papadiamantis:

There are also regular  annual events such as ART EXHIBITIONS, CHOIR and DANCE FESTIVALS, held in the Bourtzi Cultural Centre and open air-theatre, throughout the summer months:

Visit  the many hillside churches and Skiathos’ two MONASTERIES, KOUNISTRIA and EVANGELISTRIA with its Musical instrument and Folk-Lore Museum and gift shop selling the monks own wine, preserves and olive oil:

No visit to the island is complete without seeing the ruins of the ancient fortress, KASTRO:

The former capital of Skiathos, once besieged by pirates –  with its newly-restored CHURCH and AMPHITHEATRE:

and the spectacular LALARIA BEACH, noted for it’s crystal clear turquoise water and pure white stones:

For the energetic and adventurous, there’s HILL -HIKING, and gentle RAMBLING

with clearly marked NATURE TRAILS  for BIRD-WATCHING and BOTANICAL STUDY (explore alone or with organised groups):

There’s a while island to explore! Or take a short hop across the water to neighbouring islands of SKOPELOS and ALONNISSIS

WATER SPORTS – water skiing, sailing, scuba diving, snorkelling are all ready available on Skiathos’ many beaches:

HORSE RIDING

GREEK DANCING

GREEK COOKING and LANGUAGE CLASSES
PHOTOGRAPHY COURSES
YOGA, ZUMBA & PILATES CLASSES

And for fitness fanatics, there’s A FULLY EQUIPPED  GYM in Skiathos Town.

There really is something for everyone!

Just don’t forget to conserve some energy for the bustling NIGHTLIFE!  The sleepy town by day, comes alive at cocktail hour with its pubs bars, busy cafe’s and ouzerias, dotted all along the port and marinas (and where ‘people watching is the order of the day). Dine in any of the many eateries; from traditional Greek tavernas and a host of fine restaurants, brasserie/gill houses, serving international cuisine – to the ever popular ‘Gyro’ sandwich bars. And if by the early hours you’re still raring to go…well there’s always the ‘bar strip’ with it’s trendy, chic ‘Ibiza’-style nightclubs, stretching all the way out of town.

  1. Hi there,

Your blog is brilliant and has given me lots of useful ideas for Skiathos.

My sister is getting married in August and I am arranging the hen do. I am interested in finding out about Greek cookery courses in Skiathos for the afternoon. Ideally for around 10-15 people – could you help or point me in the right direction?

    Thanks so much!

  2. Hi
I have enjoyed browsing on your website and would be interested in more information in planning for September 2011. I would love to learn about painting icons and also would enjoy joining a painting class for plein air with the challenge of the light I see in your photos. As a novice I am up for anything that teaches me more! Also I am unable to find costs on your website .I hope to stay about 2 weeks or more.
Will look forward to hearing from you,
    Thankyou,
    Maureen
